Rare Earth Explorations Wildlife Safaris in India

India: Accommodations

Gir Forest National Park • Gir Lodge - Gir Lodge is situated on the edge of the forest and drives are taken into the park in open-sided jeeps (with canvas tops). The rooms are comfortably furnished with attached bathrooms and hot water. The restaurant serves Indian and Western cuisine.

Kanha • Kipling Camp - The cottages of Kipling Camp have an elegant simplicity. They are in the style of local dwellings, with tiled roofs and thick walls of whitewashed mud, each exterior decorated with a jungle animal in bas-relief. The traditional floors and wooden shutters keep the room dim and cool during the day. Dinners are outdoors under the sky at a communal table. Naturalists accompany you on open jeep drives through the forest.

Kanha • Royal Tiger Resort - Set amid 6 acres of mature sal forest, the Royal Tiger Resort is located in the buffer zone of the forest area in Kanha National Park. Inspired by the mud cottages of the local tribals, the Resort has a total of 18 comfortable suites. The cottages are arranged in clusters of two or four to accommodate guests travelling in larger or smaller groups. The air-conditioned suites offer an atmosphere of comfort and calm and are tastefully decorated. Each suite has a private adjoining verandah overlooking the forest where one can enjoy a quiet cup of tea and take in the tranquil jungle mornings. The slanting tiled roof created using local stone keeps rooms cool and dry. Large windows provide ample natural light and an unobstructed view of the forest around. A full backup generating unit ensures 24-hour hot and cold running water and electricity. Platforms for relaxing have been built around three sacred mahua trees. In the main dining room guests can enjoy delectable cuisine including fresh river fish and village poultry. The farm fresh vegetables are grown in the nearby villages. The kitchen is fitted with modern equipment and a tandoor for mouthwatering bar-be-que. A machan (or hide) created on the roof is an ideal setting for guests to enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding forest while having a drink. The well-stocked library offers a variety of reference books and reading material. And in case of emergencies, modern medical facilities are available at the nearby towns of Baihar & Malachkhand. Between visits into the park, guests can enjoy a variety of activities: nature walks along the nearby Banjar river, picnics, visits to the local markets and villages. The abundance of bird life around the resort makes it a bird watchers paradise too.

Kaziranga • Wild Grass Lodge - Wild Grass Lodge is wonderfully situated by a stream in (rice) paddy fields and forest. The accommodation is well appointed with wooden floors and cane furniture and superb service. Trained elephants (to get close to wildlife) and open jeeps (to cover distance) are used for game viewing in the park. In addition to game viewing, you can take walks through the forest and nearby tea plantations.

Keoladeo (Bharatpur) (Bharatpur) Ghana National Park • Laxmi Vilas Palace Hotel or Forest Lodge - Laxmi Vilas, situated outside the park, is a privately-owned 19th century palace converted into a hotel with each room decorated uniquely in period style. Forest Lodge is a comfortably furnished air-conditioned lodge located inside the park.

Little Rann of Kutch • Desert Coursers Zainabad Camp - This lodge is situated outside the park and is the most rustic of all the lodges we will stay at. It consists of adequately furnished 'mud huts' with attached bathrooms. The owners have designed an excellent game viewing vehicle out of a truck with open-sides and a canvas top.
