Rare Earth Explorations Wildlife Safaris in India

Wild India Safaris
India is a land of many mysteries. How did a country with a population of a billion people become the last viable home of the wild tiger? Historically the Indian people held a reverence for nature and the tiger but after the turn of the century, since it was estimated that about 50,000 tigers roamed the Indian subcontinent, the numbers have declined dramatically to 2500-4000. This is about half the world population of wild tigers. Although hunting was banned in 1972, the tiger faces the threat of poaching and degradation or depletion of its habitat. In this way, the tiger symbolizes the plight of wildlife around the world and our planet's natural heritage.

In the sacred groves of Wild India tigers, lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, lions, bears, wild dog, wild ass, bison, buffalo, antelope, deer, monkeys, crocodiles, peacocks and hundred of species of birds are still free. With Rare Earth Explorations you will explore this wilderness in open jeeps and on elephant-back led by naturalists. Unlike in Africa where wildlife is more easily seen, in India you will actually track the animals by following the signs of the forest like footprints and monkey & deer alarm calls. In the parks, you will stay in the original hunting lodges, learn about some of the conservation projects and contribute directly to them. In the cities we use five-star hotels.

Because the wildlife of India is inextricably woven into the fabric of religion, art, sculpture, and legends, the itineraries include cultural highlights such as visits to fascinating palaces and ancient temples

The focus of our Wild India Safaris is to explore the extraordinary natural wonders of India while enjoying some of the cultural highlights along the way. We have selected the warm and dry months of March and April for these trips because that is the optimal game viewing season. Your professional naturalist and guide, Toby Sinclair, will share both his wildlife and historical expertise. If you would like an extended trip through India you may take both two safaris or combine either one with any of the shorter independent cultural or safari extensions.

Although there is surprisingly abundant and diverse wildlife in India, please bear in mind that it is not as easily observed as in Africa - the vegetation is quite dense in many places and most notorious for its elusiveness is the tiger. For good reading and photographs on the parks of India please refer to Insight Guides 'Indian Wildlife'.

While the accommodation and facilities in the city hotels are comparable to world-class hotels, in the parks there will be a great variation in the quality of accommodations, which may not be developed to international standards. We have selected the best possible lodges and camps and will make all necessary arrangements to make your stay comfortable and experience fulfilling.
